Attracting Hedgehogs to a Suburban Garden

Why Hedgehogs Need Your Help

Hedgehogs are in trouble. Britain's population has fallen sharply in recent decades, with some estimates suggesting we have lost a third of them since 2000. Intensive farming, road traffic, and tidy gardens all play a part. But suburban gardens can be genuine sanctuaries. A single plot may not seem like much, yet when neighbouring gardens are linked together, they form a patchwork of foraging and nesting habitat. Your garden matters more than you might think.

Hedgehogs need four things: somewhere safe to nest, a steady supply of invertebrates, shallow water, and safe routes between gardens. Provide those, and you give a hedgehog a fighting chance.

Leave a Wild Corner

The tidy garden is a hedgehog's enemy. If you can bear to leave a patch to go a little wild, you will create vital habitat. Choose a corner out of the way and let the grass grow long. Add a log pile, a heap of leaves, or a compost heap — all offer shelter and attract the beetles, slugs, and caterpillars that hedgehogs eat.

Log piles: Stack logs loosely in shade. The gaps provide nesting sites and harbour invertebrates.
Leaf litter: Leave fallen leaves in a corner. They are a nursery for grubs and a warm blanket for hibernating hedgehogs.
Long grass: Leave a strip uncut through summer. Hedgehogs will root through it for food.
Compost heaps: A warm heap is a classic hibernation spot. Turn it carefully in winter, or leave it until spring.

Native wildflowers such as foxgloves, knapweed, and bird's-foot trefoil bring in the insects hedgehogs depend on. Avoid too much paving; a little mess is a good thing.

Create a Hedgehog Highway

Hedgehogs roam up to two kilometres a night. A solid fence or wall is an impassable barrier. The solution is simple: a 13cm by 13cm gap at ground level in every fence or wall. That is about the size of a CD case, and it is all a hedgehog needs.

Cut a notch out of a gravel board, or leave a small gap beneath a gate. If you have a solid wall, remove one brick at the base. Then talk to your neighbours. A single gap is useful, but a connected network of gardens is transformative. Encourage people on both sides to do the same, and you create a safe corridor through the neighbourhood. Check the gap regularly to keep it clear.

Remove the Dangers

Even a well-meaning garden can hold hidden hazards. Here are the main ones:

Slug pellets: Lethal to hedgehogs, whether eaten directly or via poisoned slugs. Stop using them entirely. Encourage frogs, birds, and beetles instead.
Strimmers and mowers: Always check long grass before cutting. A curled hedgehog is easily injured. Cut from the centre outwards.
Ponds: Hedgehogs can swim but cannot climb steep sides. Add a sloping ramp or rough wood at the edge.
Netting: Keep it at least 30cm above ground. Hedgehogs get tangled, often fatally.
Drains and holes: Cover open drains. Hedgehogs fall in and cannot escape.
Bonfires: Build on the day you light them. A pre-built pile is a tempting hibernation site.

Food, Water and Feeding

Hedgehogs are nocturnal foragers, eating beetles, earthworms, slugs, and caterpillars. You can supplement their diet, especially in dry weather. Put out meat-based cat or dog food (not fish), or specialist hedgehog biscuits. Cooked chicken, scrambled egg, and a little chopped fruit are fine too.

Never give bread or milk. Hedgehogs are lactose intolerant, and milk causes serious digestive problems. Fresh water is essential — use a shallow dish. Place food and water at dusk, and remove leftovers in the morning to avoid attracting rats.

If you see a hedgehog out in daylight, it is likely in trouble. Contact a local wildlife rescue. Do not try to keep it as a pet.

A Year in the Hedgehog Garden

Hedgehogs follow the seasons, and your garden can support them through each one.

Spring: They emerge from hibernation and begin mating. Keep water available and leave nesting material alone.
Summer: The busiest time. Females raise hoglets, and young hedgehogs may appear in late summer. Keep feeding and watering.
Autumn: They build fat reserves for winter. A reliable food supply now can mean the difference between surviving hibernation and not. Provide a hedgehog house filled with dry leaves.
Winter: They hibernate in nests of leaves, grass, and moss. Do not disturb any nest. Check compost heaps and log piles before moving them.

With a wild corner, a gap in the fence, and a dish of water, you can turn a suburban plot into a genuine hedgehog haven. It costs very little, and the reward is one of Britain's most charming creatures snuffling about at dusk.
